What To Do If You Have Locked The Keys In The Car

Read this list of recommended tips and actions to take if you have locked your key in your car. It helps to relax and stay calm — there is little you can effectively do to get back in your car until the locksmith arrives.

Leave the car alone. In other words, don’t try to force the lock with another instrument like a screwdriver, another key, or coat hanger. Indeed, our locksmiths have seen customers try to do this. Although the customer is always right, in this case, forcing a lock without the right tool can damage the lock and door.

A damaged door lock or the wrong key broken off in the lock will cost you much more than just hiring a professional!  I know in the moment of panic it may seem like a good idea but the locks aren’t unlocked that easy or burglars would be able to get in fairly easily.

Don’t Have A Spare Car Key?

If you don’t have a spare key with a friend or nearby, you’ll need to call a professional locksmith

It’s always a good idea to keep a spare or duplicate of your key. These days most keys are “smart keys” and the car won’t lock with the key inside. However, keys getting locked in cars even with smart keys happens all the time. In fact, AAA cited 4 million such cases in 2013! By that time most vehicles had smart keys and they were still getting locked inside.  Although many of our customers think they don’t have a chip on their key, most keys do. If your key has a black hat or covers around the base of the key, the key has a chip. The locksmith will likely need to remove the cover to fix the chip or reprogram the key. If your key is just locked in your car, handling the chip won’t be needed.

There’s not a lot you can do until the professional locksmith arrives. Go ahead and wait by your vehicle. Stay near enough to the car so that when the locksmith calls, you can pick up and go to the car quickly. Our locksmiths will always let you know their estimated time of arrival and when they have arrived.

Our locksmiths can be on the scene in 15 to 30 minutes. If there’s traffic, it can take up to 45 minutes. However, we know the distress you can feel when you’re key is locked in your car. For that reason, our locksmiths respond immediately to your call. You’ll never get a robot automated call system when you call us.
